The Songs of Distant Earth

by Arthur C. Clarke

Hundreds of years after Earth's destruction in the year 3620, a ship carrying a million cryogenically sleeping survivors makes a pre-programmed stop at a planet halfway to its final destination to a distant planet they intend to colonize. The small revived-team discover this planet has been colonized by a previous exploratory mission 700 years before, and the inhabitants have created a peaceful utopian society. The encounter changes the lives of the inhabitants and the course of their history as well as the lives of the crew members who resume their journey to awaken hundreds of years later at their far distant new home in the stars. A very insightful and lyrical glimpse of humanity's hope and potential and place in the universe.
